@Lashan:

Thanks for your comments!

I checked out the imdb forum, but alas got side-tracked by the top discussion and didn't make it to the "howtodrawmangoes" (that title gave me a giggle). On the upside, I now know the subject for my next post, thanks!

From the looks of it, he's coming from the "white default" mentality. (No offense to any Greeks, but most get classified as white, too) I see it a lot, where people react negatively to the idea of no white representation, but find nothing wrong with the lack of non-white representation. It comes from privilege.

Great Article. Exactly whats going on in my head right now except in a very good argument.

you need to talk to this unknowing racist on "The Last Airbender" imdb forums called "howtodrawmangoes".

he thinks having an all all asian cast for an asian culture derived movie is racist, having an all white cast isn't, and having an Ancient Greek movie full of greeks isn't racist.
what a hypocrite.

You pretty much wrote what I'm thinking about this whole issue.

The thing that frustrates me is that the movie industry type casts. If you don't look the part, you won't get the part. It's as simple as that. But for some unknown reason, they've gone completely against what the industry has been doing for years.

Example, If I was casting for Cool Runnings (Which is about the Jamaican bob sled team) and I casted an all white cast, it would just be ridiculous because all the characters are from Jamaica. Which is the same way I feel about this movie.

Excellent article. You managed to eloquently write so much of what I could only sputter indignantly at people.
People really don't understand how "Caucasian or any ethnicity" casting is inherently racist, especially when the preference is given to Caucasians right there in the sentence. It really boggles my mind.

Re: octagon

Good argument but this is not real life we are talking about.

No offense, because a lot of people fall back on this argument -- but it's one of the dumbest ones out there. 50 years ago, interracial marriage in the USA wasn't "real life" either. In fact, nearly all equality in "real life" exists because people talked about it and fought for it.

"It is what it is" only because we haven't finished changing it yet. Change can't happen until we all decide what 'should' be and gather the momentum to make it happen.

Why would a movie studio stand for the hiring of a less than perfect actor?

Because they already do? Admittedly, the phrase "perfect actor" is subjective. (And the article outlines my stance on the matter.) I'm assuming you mean the "perfect actor" as in someone who is skilled at accurately portraying character.

In which case, if you REALLY believe this, how many movies have you watched in your life? Have you never really come across a movie with an actress who couldn't act to save her life, but gosh was she ever pretty? Or for that matter, watched movies with Big Name actors who were good, but just totally wrong for the role? Also, how many movies with casts of mostly child-actors have you watched that were Oscar worthy?

Studios don't care about perfection. They don't even really care about that budget (consider how they'll pour millions into a potential blockbuster) -- what they care about is the return they'll get on it.

Do they truly believe that hiring people of color for the Last Airbender movie would get them less money at the box office? Honestly, I don't know and they'd never admit to it. The only other option is that they couldn't find a single person of color who was "talented enough" or "perfect" for any of the main roles -- and I just can't believe that.
